10.04 Good, those who have finished copying are now filling in the family tree of the Royal Family On questioning you will find that they fill it in by using the initial letter cues, not knowledge or understanding, e.g. Pr ... C ... unmistakable. They then look for these letters in the work they have copied and copy them from their history books onto the paper without necessarily understanding the construction and nature of the family tree. They are not necessarily using initial sounds to get the words either. It is a good idea but I think you are assuming too much prior knowledge â they mainly use an infill strategy without understanding. One or two of the more able ones might understand. Good, I noted you change to this because the children were restless and had to be given something to do.
If you really wanted to check their understanding, as a game ask them to draw their own family (or the Royal Family) tree as a test. If they cannot do this then you need to consider how you would teach it. One way might be to start with your own family tree and show parents, siblings and children. Let them try and write theirs. One way which is easier than a family tree is the family circle, e.g. this leaves out sibs but enables you to draw the tree from it and extend it to put in the relevant information.
